  YOGA THERAPY - Cardiovascular Diseases

YOGA – NATURAL PATH TO A HEALTHY HEART

According to the World Health Organization, the general population most commonly suffers from cardiovascular diseases. This is due to the disordered psychophysical balance.

Yoga as a science of man leads to:
• decrease of tension, stress, anxiety and other psychophysical problems
• acquiring of psychophysical relaxation and stability
• strengthening the body
• acquiring awareness of oneself, lifestyle, work and rest, other people and surrounding.

A specialized yoga program was applied in the rehabilitation regimen of the patients at the Institute for Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases in Ohrid from 1992 to 2002. The courses were attended by over 1300 patients.

Physical improvements:
• increased condition and decreased fatigue
• increased elasticity
• efficient physical rest
• decreased joint and muscle pain

Psychomental improvements:
• increased tranquility and relaxation
• mood improvement
• decreased fear of disease
• increased self-confidence
• calmer sleeping
• decreased tension
• increased stress-resistance
• decreased depression

One should practice yoga techniques tranquilly, slowly, consciously and in coordination with the breathing. Yoga does not burden the body and the cardiovascular system, but it relieves them.
The theoretical educational part of the program consisted of lectures and conversations about principles of yoga, stress and how to cope with it, diet, and lifestyle and how to change unhealthy habits, how to treat oneself, other people, the job and the surroundings. The program included practical instructions on conscious walking coordinated with breathing and ways to recognize and control fatigue.
The program is created to enable reduction of consequences due to tension, stress, anxiety and other psychophysical problems, to strengthen the body, to acquire psychophysical relaxation and stability, to become aware of the way of life, work and rest, relationship with oneself, other people and surroundings.
